New information has been recently published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) that seems to indicate no abatement in rapidly rising Obesity Trends. Previously there were, and still are, 25 years of data with subsequent images available for download from the CDC. This data and images spanned the years 1985 to 2010. Then for some reason the data stopped being reported. We wondered what was up with that! Well, we are now happy to report that new data has arrived. However, there is a caveat in that the new data is somehow being gathered in a different fashion. So, the CDC web site tells us, regarding this new data: "Prevalence estimates reflect BRFSS methodological changes started in 2011. These estimates should not be compared to prevalence estimates before 2011."
Had we been willing to make a prediction of what would happen in these past three years, based on the trends from the previous twenty five years, the results would have been pretty close to spot on to what you will see displayed in the new map for 2013! In a word or two regarding Obesity rates in America from 2011 to 2013 we could quote an old fashioned elevator operator and simply say they appear to be "Going Up"!... Still! :-(
Since we are not supposed to compare this data with previous data we won't. Instead, We would like to invite you to look at the images and ponder them for yourself. To see the old and new images visit our Obesity Trends Data page at DrCarney.com. We have a slideshow, at the top of the page, with the images from 1985 to 2010. Click on the arrows on the sides of the images to flip through them. Don't flip out though. It is a pretty shocking 25 years!
We also have just written an article with the new Obesity Trends map from 2013. A new slideshow was created as well with the images from 2011 to 2013. These images have been appended to the bottom of the page and you can also click through them. There are only three images. One thing different about these latest set of images is that they show 2013 Obesity Trends by Race/Ethnicity and State.
Again the page to read these articles and view all the images is located at: http://www.drcarney.com/home/obesity-trends-data
The good news is that there is an answer to this obesity epidemic! The solution is not only possible, it is also delicious. There are two oars to the rowboat of obesity control; Diet and Exercise. However, we see the greatest results when diets are changed and people adopt the Starch-Smart® System of Dietary Care Extraordinaire. The reason why: After people change their diets and adopt the Starch-Smart® System, they very quickly feel so energized that they naturally gravitate towards exercise. In fact generally they feel that they have to exercise! Unfortunately the reverse often does not happen. Many people start to exercise but do not subsequently decide to eat healthy. We (You and I) need both!
BTW, we would like to give a word of thanks to Jeff Novick, MS, RD, LD, LN for posting to Facebook that the new CDC images and data are now available!
